Calla : Self-reliant outdoor lighting

A total of 90% of electricity in the United States stems from non-renewable resources. Calla is an off the grid outdoor lighting system comprising of a phosphorescent pigment, resin, LED and solar cell. . Calla envisions the future of lighting to not only be an environmentally friendly one but also self-reliant and beautiful.

When form meets technology

To find a balance between light and gradient, several shape iterations were explored. How the solar cell components could be integrated into the body of the light most efficiently was also analyzed.

Building Process

Due to Calla’s geometries, a 3D printed water soluble mold was used to make a mold. Phosphorescent powder was then mixed with resin for the body of the piece, and a solar cell was altered to fit the body.

Self-Reliant

Calla was designed as a 100% self-reliant outdoor lighting piece. During the day, the phosphorescent pigment as well as the solar cell, both absorb the suns energy and at night return that energy into two light forms (the glow and the led). The amount of energy Calla absorbs throughout the day, lasts exactly through the night as it prepares for the next round of sun the next day!
